Targeted Release Probiotics Gold™

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), probiotics are “live microorganisms administered in adequate amounts which confer a beneficial health effect on the host”. Most probiotics are bacteria, which are small, single-celled organisms and are categorized by the genus and species names. For example, for the probiotic bacterium, Lactobacillus acidophilus , the genus is Lactobacillus and the species is acidophilus.

One yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, belonging to the strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae has also been evaluated as a probiotic. The name “boulardii”, however, is not a recognized scientific species of Saccharomyces. Most probiotic products contain bacteria from the genera Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium, although other genera like Escherichia, Enterococcus, Bacillus, Propionibacterium and Saccharomyces (a yeast) have been developed and marketed as probiotics.

Health Benefits of Probiotics

The human body plays host to many types and millions of microbes on our skin, in our mouths, in women's vaginal tracts, and all the way through the GI tract. In fact, it is estimated that there are more microbes associated with the human body than there are human cells in the body. More importantly than the numbers and types of microbes that colonize our bodies is the dynamic interactions between the microbes and the microbes and the body. These beneficial interactions help support digestion, metabolism, vitamin synthesis, immune system function, intestinal barrier function, defense against pathogens, and other healthful activities that are critical to human health.

Probiotics Delivery Systems - Enteric Coating vs. Bio-Tract®

With the exception of oral probiotics that are useful in maintaining oral health, all other probiotics must survive the digestive tract and reach the small and large intestines where they are needed the most. Unprotected, the vast majority of live probiotics entering the stomach won't survive to reach the optimal sites in the GI tract where they aid in the completion of the digestion process of any food components that were not digested in the small intestine and help replenish beneficial bacteria that can support healthy immune function.

Many of the commercially available probiotic supplements are "enteric-coated" to help ensure that they survive the gastric acids and reach the gut, but this has been shown to not be as effective at protecting the sensitive probiotics as previously thought. Moreover, the ingredients that are used as enteric coating can sometimes inhibit optimal breakdown and assimilation of the probiotics even after they reach the intestines. Bio-tract® is a patented delivery system designed to protect the majority of the probiotics from the harsh gastric environment, while providing optimal release of live organisms throughout the digestive tract. The ingredients used in this patented delivery system are natural and free of GMOs.

Targeted Release Probiotics Gold™ Frequently Asked Questions:

What are Probiotics?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), probiotics are “live microorganisms administered in adequate amounts which confer a beneficial health effect on the host." Most probiotics are bacteria, which are small, single-celled organisms and are categorized by the genus and species names. Most probiotic products contain bacteria from the genera Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium, although other genera like Escherichia, Enterococcus, Bacillus, Propionibacterium and Saccharomyces (a yeast) have been developed and marketed as probiotics.

What are Prebiotics?
Prebiotics are indigestible carbohydrate fibers that ferment in your gut. As they ferment, prebiotics produce nutrients that help encourage the growth of good bacteria in your gut. This helps the beneficial intestinal flora multiply and outnumber the amount of harmful bacteria.

What are the active ingredients in Probiotics Gold™?
Each vegetarian tablet of Probiotics Gold™ features 6 premium strains of beneficial microflora to help support digestive and immune health. Additionally, each tablet also contains Inulin, a prebiotic fiber, that works to help support growth of beneficial microflora in the gut. Together, the probiotic flora and prebiotic fiber provide dual support and work synergistically to help manage a healthful ratio of healthy and unhealthy gut microflora.

Does Probiotics Gold™ contain anything other than the active ingredients?
Other than the active ingredients, each vegetarian tablet of the Probiotics Gold™ contains the following other ingredients that are part of the patented Bio-Tract™, which ensure optimal, targeted, intestinal release of the probiotics and the prebiotic fiber.

  • Microcrystalline Cellulose and Hydroxypropyl MethylCellulose - These are natural ingredients sourced from non-GMO plant cellulose
  • Pectin - This is a soluble gelatinous polysaccharide that is present in ripe fruits and is extracted for use as a setting agent
  • Sodium Carbonate - This is a food additive that is generally included to help regulate ph balance and, in some cases, to help ensure product stability
  • Vegetable Stearic Acid - This is a natural lubricant sourced from non-GMO vegetable sources. As a general rule, NutriGold® is opposed to use of Vegetable Stearic Acid or Magnesium Stearate in any of its products, but decided to make an exception in this particular case because the ingredient is part of a proprietary, patented blend of ingredients that go into the Bio-Tract® delivery system and helps ensure product integrity
  • Guar Gum - This is a natural extract of guar beans that is approved for use as a good additive. Guar Gum is a water-soluble fiber and can help support digestive health
  • Turmeric - This is a natural spice extracted from the root of Turmeric. In addition to its role as a natural coloring agent, it may also offer some antioxidant protection to the sensitive probiotics in the product

What does Bio-Tract® mean?
With the exception of oral probiotics that are useful in maintaining oral health, all other probiotics must survive the digestive tract and reach the small and large intestines where they are needed the most. Unprotected, the vast majority of live probiotics entering the stomach won't survive to reach the optimal sites in the GI tract where they aid in the completion of the digestion process of any food components that were not digested in the small intestine and help replenish beneficial bacteria that can support healthy digestive and immune function.

Is Probiotics Gold™ free of allergens and GMOs?
Probiotics Gold™ is free of soy, wheat, egg, peanut, and shellfish. However, the product may contains traces of milk protein and, for this reason, may not be suitable for consumption by individuals with a known or suspected allergy to milk protein. This product is pending GMO-free certification by the Non-GMO Project™.

Is Probiotics Gold™ suitable for Vegans / Vegetarians?
Because Probiotics Gold™ may contain milk or milk derivatives, it is suitable for vegetarians, but not vegans.

How long do I have to take Probiotics Gold™ before I notice any benefits?
Unlike OTC and prescription drugs that provide instant, temporary, symptomatic relief, dietary supplements provide progressive, long-term benefits by strengthening and supporting the body's natural defenses. Most supplements, including Probiotics Gold™, need to be taken for at least 6 to 8 weeks before the benefits of taking the supplement can be experienced. Please be advised that nutritional supplements work best when they are taken as part of a health maintenance program that includes a sensible diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, a moderate exercise program, and the necessary lifestyle changes to support wellness.

Is Probiotics Gold™ suitable for individuals with a medical condition?
Individuals with a known or suspected medical condition should consult their healthcare provider before taking Probiotics Gold™.

Is Probiotics Gold™ suitable for individuals taking antibiotics?
Probiotics Gold™ can be taken by individuals who are on antibiotic therapy for a bacterial infection. Please be advised that Probiotics Gold™ should be taken 30 minutes after the antibiotic has been taken to help replenish beneficial bacteria that may have been destroyed by the antibiotic.

What are the side effects and/or contraindications, if any, associated with Probiotics Gold™?
Although not common, some of the side effects that individuals may experience when they first start taking this product may be diarrhea, bloating, gas, and/or abdominal pain. This is likely the result of the the beneficial bacteria forcing out the harmful bacteria that may have been accumulating in the gut over a period of time. In most cases, these symptoms are temporary and should resolve on their own once the body gets used to the probiotic supplement. In the meantime, one way to help reduce risk of these symptoms is to start at the low dosage (1 vegetarian tablet a day) and slowly work your way to the maximum recommended dosage of 3 tablets a day.

Is Probiotics Gold™ safe for long-term use?
When used as directed and under the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider, Probiotics Gold™ should be safe for long-term use.
